Freddric J. Schweiss, age 80, of Courtland, MN passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, January 20, 2020.

Mass of Christian burial was on Friday, January 24, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm, MN with Monsignor John Richter celebrating the Mass. Private family burial will be at a later date in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Freddric Joseph Schweiss was born on October 24, 1939 in rural Fairfax, MN to John and Lucia (Linsmeier) Schweiss. Fred was baptized in infancy and later received his first Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Fairfax. Fred attended grade school at St. Andrew’s Catholic School and graduated from Fairfax Public High School in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1960-1966.

On April 16, 1966, Fred was united in marriage to Helen Marie Homan at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Browns Valley, MN. The couple resided in Fairfax where Fred worked for George Nelson Equipment and Sales until he started farming in 1967. They had six children. In his later years, he worked for Schweiss Distributing and settled in Courtland, upon retirement. Fred and Helen celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Fred enjoyed playing his Hengel concertina. He played with the Domeier Band for many years. He loved restoring old tractors and completed restoration of his beloved Super MTA and Super C. Fred was an avid gardener and enjoyed tinkering and making lawn ornaments for his family. Fred enjoyed singing and was a member of the St. Andrew’s Church choir and the St. Andrew’s Church polka band. More recently, he became a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. He was a member of The Catholic Aid and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing golf, loved to read and spending time with his family. His 16 grandchildren were the light of his life.

Fred is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Duane (Ann) Schweiss of LaVista, NE, Karen Schweiss of Fairmont, Kevin (Lisa) Schweiss of Fairfax, Shari (Joel) Black of Gibbon, Sarah (Michael) Lee of Courtland, and Christopher (Sara) Schweiss of North Mankato; grandchildren, Kyle Villella, Nick, Jake, and Luke Schweiss, Alanna Correll, Allen and Julia Schweiss, Rachel and Aaron Black, Logan, Ian, Chase, and Weston Lee, Cole, Shay, Jaxson, and Jace Schweiss; mother-in-law, Marcella “Sally” Homan; sisters, Loretta Johannason of Maplewood, Jeanne Schweiss of Bloomington; brothers, James (Lorraine) Schweiss of Mankato, LeRoy (Colleen) Schweiss of Fairfax, Myron (Sue) Schweiss of Fairfax; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Judith Schweiss and Mary Ellen Langsworthy; father-in-law, Sylvester Homan; niece, Lisa Langworthy; and brother-in-law, Berger Johannason.
