Ron Deming, Gary Scharfencamp, and Carl Buboltz, members of the Franklin American Legion Martin-Jensen Post 308, presented 27 Cedar Mountain third graders with their own dictionaries last Wednesday, on Veteran’s Day. The presentation was part of ‘The Dictionary Project’, a program designed to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come.

A recent spike in the number of positive COVID-19 cases across the state has caused Governor Tim Walz and the Department of Public Health to implement additional restrictions on restaurants and bars, as well as public and private gatherings.

The process follows the completion of Superintendent Horton’s 100 Day Plan.\
At a special board meeting on Monday, Superintendent Jeff Horton wrapped up his first 100 Day Plan for GFW Public Schools as well as announced the next steps in the process for shaping the district. Financial consultants from Baird Financial Management laid the groundwork for a new budget model and Gail Gilman from Minnesota School Board Association provided information on the strategic planning process.

According to Fairfax City Administrator Nicholas Johnson, and the Renville County Public Health Department, COVID-19 cases within the city of Fairfax have risen dramatically in the last several weeks.

The distance from Bologna, Italy to Winthrop, Minnesota is 4,783 miles.
Bologna, located in the northern part of Italy, is the home Lorenzo Catapano, GFW’s 2020-21 foreign exchange student.
Back home, he has two older sisters and one younger brother. His sisters and his dad were exchange students when they were younger, so Lorenzo wanted to give it a try.

The Lutheran Social Services (LSS) received a COVID-19 relief grant from the Minnesota Department of Education and will be providing a free community meal this Friday, November 13.
The homestyle meals are produced at local LSS kitchens and are individually portioned with a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and spices to taste great. They will be sealed and given out in reusable bags.
