GFW School Board selects new logo, finalists for superintendent position

The GFW School Board met for their regular meeting on Monday, May 18 via electronic means.

After the agenda was approved, the board moved on to approve the Consent Agenda.

The GFW School Board interviewed three finalists for the position of District Superintendent via Zoom meeting on Thursday, May 21, 2020. 

Following the interviews, the board, along with Harold Remme and Ed Waltman of the South Central Service Cooperative, reconvened to discuss each of the candidates and determine which of the candidates they wanted to enter into a contract with.

Hillmann shares her NYC experience

Back in mid-April, we told you about nurse and Gibbon native Megan Hillmann, who was going to New York City to help treat COVID-19 patients and to help provide some relief for hospital workers there.

She is back home now and was willing to share her experience with us.

Memorial Day 2020

The Winthrop Honor Guard made the rounds to area cemeteries on Monday morning for their annual Memorial Day ceremonies. Prayers for the fallen and current military were offered, followed by the gun salute. Taps was played by Samuel Stresemann and Lynnae Grack.  (Staff photo by Denise Bonsack)

Governor’s Stay Home order allowed to expire

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s ‘Stay Home’ order was allowed to expire as of Monday, May 18. The State transitioned from ‘Stay Home Minnesota’ to a ‘Stay Safe’ campaign.

So what does this mean for us? Well, that depends.

Fairfax Community Market Weekly Progress Update

Work continues in the grocery store. The flooring and interior walls are installed in the back room and food-prep area, as well as through the walk-in cooler. The ceiling and lighting will be finished shortly, which will allow for the equipment to be moved in. We are also anticipating the shelving and check stands to go into place very soon.

You’ve probably noticed the new exterior signage! On Friday May 15 the installers came in and put the new signs up. The Fairfax Community Market reflects the Economic Development Authority’s purpose and goal for this project; bringing back a critical business for our community. We’ve all felt the pain of not having fresh local produce, fruits, meat, and other staple foods. Our renewed grocery store will bring those back to us.

(Editor’s note) This is the culmination of a story we started in last week’s edition.

Brock Kiecker came back to play with his brother Dana and the Fairfax Cardinals in 1981. While warming up during pregame, Doc Bauman would always ask him, “Need a little Novocain tonight?” Then he restarted playing with the Richfield team in 1990. They played in the Federal League, which was “real baseball”. He was with the Richfield Rockets team for 22 years. 

Sibley County buildings re-open

Sibley County Courthouse and Service Center will again be open to the public for services with restriction starting Monday May 18 with limited hours in some departments as well as limited access to staff.
