We did it! We pulled together as a community and reached our goal! So far at the Standard-Gazette & Messenger office we have collected $3,510 to be donated to Sharon Fossum’s Spirit of the Season program. If we couple that with the original $2,500 in matching funds from our anonymous donor, that’s over $6,000 for this great program!

The Franklin City Council met for their regular meeting on Monday, November 9, 2020, at 7:00 p.m.
Following the Pledge of Allegiance and the approval of the minutes and agenda, the group discussed continuing issues with noncompliant properties. Some property owners have made progress, others have not. The properties that continue to be an issue will be reviewed with Deputy Peterson, and if the problems continue, legal action will be taken by the City.

The Fairfax City Council met for their November meeting on Thursday, November 12.
The first item under New Business was the Public Hearing on Proposed Assessments. The Council approved Resolution 2020-21 which certified delinquent utility bills and other assessments to the Renville County Auditor so they can be collected via property taxes.

Ron Deming, Gary Scharfencamp, and Carl Buboltz, members of the Franklin American Legion Martin-Jensen Post 308, presented 27 Cedar Mountain third graders with their own dictionaries last Wednesday, on Veteran’s Day. The presentation was part of ‘The Dictionary Project’, a program designed to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come.

A recent spike in the number of positive COVID-19 cases across the state has caused Governor Tim Walz and the Department of Public Health to implement additional restrictions on restaurants and bars, as well as public and private gatherings.

The process follows the completion of Superintendent Horton’s 100 Day Plan.\
At a special board meeting on Monday, Superintendent Jeff Horton wrapped up his first 100 Day Plan for GFW Public Schools as well as announced the next steps in the process for shaping the district. Financial consultants from Baird Financial Management laid the groundwork for a new budget model and Gail Gilman from Minnesota School Board Association provided information on the strategic planning process.

According to Fairfax City Administrator Nicholas Johnson, and the Renville County Public Health Department, COVID-19 cases within the city of Fairfax have risen dramatically in the last several weeks.
The current numbers, as indicated on the chart above, are current as of Monday morning, November 9.
