Unseasonably warm early March temps resulted in a fast snow-melt, kicking off the spring flooding season in our area. Several roads and bridges were closed near Henderson and St. Peter last week due to ice jams and water over the roads. The Minnesota River south of Fairfax and Franklin swelled over its banks, but so far, no road closures have been reported in this area.

According to a press release on the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) website, Fairfax native Paul Kiecker was recently appointed to serve as the Administrator of the USDA’s Food and Safety Inspection Service.

Living in a rural area definitely has benefits too numerous to mention. We are not immune to the recent shortage of everyday supplies like toilet paper, but we do have an advantage in our population density when it comes to the concerns over the COVID-19 threat.

Twenty-seven 4-H’ers were polishing up on their job interviewing skills when they went through a mock job interview. On January 27 at the Sibley County Extension Office contestants filled out an application or resume’ and were interviewed by age category for a job they were interested in.

Carl Runck, son of Wally and Iris Runck of rural Fairfax, was recently named to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 list for 2020.
Runck is a 1998 graduate of GFW High School. While attending GFW, he worked for Schweiss Doors as a drafter. But even from a very young age, he always had an interest in architecture and wanted to do more on the entrepreneurial side.

The Fairfax Economic Development Authority (EDA) continues to work towards reopening our local grocery store. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is the agency from which a grocery store license must be obtained. The EDA finalized plans with the Dept. of Agriculture in late January 2020 which allowed work to begin on updating and making improvements to the building. The scope of the project includes code mandated changes, deferred maintenance, as well as updates for the customer experience.
