The Toward Zero Deaths Car Seat Clinic and Traffic Safety event held in Fairfax on Wednesday, May 26 was a big success. Jesse Hudec, the Meeker Co TZD Coordinator, brought the Seat Belt Convincer and told the public his story about being saved by his seatbelt at 16. The Convincer really had an impact on those who rode it and those who just viewed someone else testing it out. The group did 18 car seat checks and gave away 4 seats. (Submitted photos)

Two weeks ago we had an article about Cedar Mountain Elementary Principal Patti Machart retiring after 41 years. But the district is losing more than just the principal. Also retiring at the end of this school year are First Grade Teacher Nancy Tews, Title I Paraprofessional Deb Christensen, and Special Ed/Title I Para Etta Weber.

The Hess Technology Season Opener at the Arlington Raceway saw 128 drivers sign in to give fans a great show and new shiny cars. Mason Goettl from Winsted led the first few laps from his front row starting spot. A red flag came out on the first lap when the #32 Chad Volk rolled his car in turn #4, he was ok but out of the race. On the restart, Goettl once again led but soon had the company of Cory Probst from Brewster who had started 12th and is last year's track champion.

The Frandsen Bank & Trust - Fairfax Office celebrated Penny’s 21st Birthday last week with visits to the GFW & PLS Elementary Schools in Gibbon. Penny shared birthday treats and color sheets with the students while learning about Penny’s Savings Club. Penny had so much fun on the playground with the kids playing basketball, kickball, soccer, merry-go-round rides and the kids even made Penny fit through the slide! (Submitted photos)

The GFW School Board held their regular meeting on Monday, May 17.
After the agenda was approved, the group moved on to School and Community Recognition. This month the recipient of the award was the Fairfax EDA. Superintendent Jeff Horton thanked the group for their partnership in recent months and cited the help provided in getting the Fairfax school building sold.

Cedar Mountain Elementary Principal, Mrs. Patti Machart, has been a constant presence at Cedar Mountain Elementary School for more than four decades. Now, as she prepares to enter retirement, she looks back on her time both in the classroom and in the principal’s office.

Three seniors at Cedar Mountain High School, who live in the Morgan area, received the Lions Senior Achievement Award for separate nine-week periods during the Morgan Lions meeting May 10.
